Back to I did not claim it because.

I’m a non-traditional student with two children. I don’t pay hardly any taxes since all I have is part time work and I live, in part on student loans.
Mary went back to school after her divorce. At her part time job at the college she claimed EXEMPT on her W-4 so no federal income tax was withheld. She needed all of it to live. She even had to take out a student loan. In the summer Mary works at a greenhouse. Her total income for the year is $15,000 and only $213 was withheld. Mary receives child support. It could cost as much as $150 or more to pay a tax preparer to file her taxes. She’s busy and, before the divorce would not have been eligible for the EITC.
Mary is eligible for the EITC and could get up to $2,700 refund in addition to the refund of the taxes that were held back from her pay at the greenhouse. Mary might even be eligible for a portion of the Child Tax Credit.
In Minnesota she is also eligible for the Working Family Credit worth about 1/3 of the EITC refundable amount.
Mary wasn’t going to file because she didn’t feel she had the time or the dollars to pay a tax preparer. Mary could have filed herself or gone to a free tax preparation site.
