The EITC is tax law. It is not about handouts or hand-ups. If you are eligible for this refundable credit it is because Congress created tax law regulations to make the tax system fairer for all. For low-to moderate-income workers, the EITC recognizes that you are paying a much higher percentage of your income for basic needs and, in many cases, taxes.

For example, a person making $1,500 a month and paying rent/mortgage of $750 is paying 50% of their income for a house. A person making
$40,000 a year ($3,333 per month) is paying less than 25% of their earned income for housing. The same is true for other basic needs such as gas, utilities, auto insurance, etc. Sales tax, property tax and costs of most other basic goods and services also put low-to moderate-income wage earners at a disadvantage. That’s why Congress made the EITC tax law, not an assistance program.
