Project & Initiatives

At Lakes & Prairies we have our programs - Child Care Resource & Referral, Housing/Self-Sufficiency, Clay County Seniors, Clay-Wilkin Head Start and Rainbow Bridge. Within these programs are often many various services.

In addition, special projects and initiatives are yet another part of how we respond to the emerging needs of children, families and seniors and our charge to get involved with community in ways that respond to current events and needs. They are different than our core programs because the issues or needs cut across program lines or they are of importance to the communities we serve or the region as a whole.

We understand that individuals, families and communities are constantly changing. We therefore participate in community-wide collaborative efforts and evaluate our own role as a community action in how we can best make a difference. In 2006, the second year of the VITA free tax preparation project, the number of individuals and families served increased from 84 to 304. Refunds for low income working families rose to more than $500,000.00.

The millions of dollars being lost in our communities because many people are unaware of their qualifying for Earned Income and other tax credits, now has resulted in a 3-year outreach effort to get the word out. We won’t be doing this alone. There are more than 15 non-profit and human service agencies representing both Minnesotans and North Dakotans focused on reaching as many people as possible. 

Special initiatives and projects spring forth from real issues. Homelessness Prevention, Financial Literacy, Asset Development, Community Engagement, are but a few more examples of how we direct our energies and resources in this area. Look to this page frequently for areas you are interested in or would be willing to help with.
